Bringing a new dog home? Don’t expect them to settle in overnight. Like people, dogs need time to adjust to new surroundings.
The 3x3x3 Rule is a general guideline for what you can expect during the first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months. Every dog is different, but this framework can help you understand what they’re going through. It applies to all dogs: puppies, rescues, and seniors alike.
First 3 Days – Decompression
- Overwhelmed, scared, or unsure of what’s happening
- Not comfortable enough to show their true personality
- May not eat or drink much
- Might shut down, hide, or test boundaries
- Trouble resting both mentally and physically
After 3 Weeks – Finding Routines
- Starts to feel more at ease
- Learns the household routine
- Understands their new environment
- Personality starts to shine through
- Any behaviour issues may resurface or begin to ease
After 3 Months – Feeling at Home
- Fully settled into the home and lifestyle
- Building strong bonds with family members
- Developing trust and a sense of security
The best way to ensure a smooth transition is to prepare ahead of time. Set up a safe space for your dog, learn about transition techniques, and remember: strong relationships are built on trust, consistency, and communication.
