Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: This session focused on his emergency drops at the pony oval. As we walked along we asked for him to drop with just a verbal, but continued to walk. We had to help him out at the start and slow down just a bit while he got into position, however we were able to quickly progress to not slowing down at all. Keep practicing this, gradually building up to a long line so you can keep walking further away from him. Focus: Repetition B+
Skill learnt: Conditioning Comment: This session we worked on his leaf blower, hair dryer, vacuum cleaner conditioning. We utilised his place skill while exposing him to these triggers. When at home, utilise their crates, have them on lead and/or on place (give them a job to do). If necessary set the vacuum cleaner in one room at a time so they are not in the same area. Even use if for a training session, have them on place on lead (tethered or holding it) and have the vacuum moving around them. It’s really important to set them up for success instead of letting them free roam and allowed to make those decisions for themselves. Focus: Conditioning A
Skill learnt: Trick Training Comment: His last session was a little bit of fun, we started teaching him “hold”. We used a thick rope toy marking “yes” and rewarding him each time he nibbled the toy. As he progresses you can start to build more duration. It’s important with this that you say “yes” towards the end of each repetition, as they will drop the toy to eat the treat. For this skill “yes” becomes a reward and release marker! Focus: Duration C+

We recommend your next step should be…
