Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: Wolfgang’s first session was drop. Dogs need a good drop skill for when being approached by other people and dogs and helps with impulse control. Wolfgang really struggled at first and the trainer used treats to lure him into position. As Wolfgang started to get a grasp on what was required the trainer started working on Wolfgang’s duration. This meant an increase in treats until he stopped breaking position as soon as his butt hit the ground. By the end of the session Wolfgang was starting to drop without the lure and holding position better. Focus: Repetition C+
Skill learnt: Recall Comment: Next up was recalls. The trainer did this in the classroom in a long lead and Wolfgang wasn’t keen to listen at first. But he soon worked out that the leash pressure meant stop smelling and listen and he then started returning to the trainer more. Make sure you use high value treats for recalls and make sure you practice at home in the backyard with the biggest distractions. If he can do recalls in the backyard perfectly then he can start practicing outside the home. Focus: Distraction B
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: Last session for Wolfgang was loose lead walking and greetings. Wolfgang did pull a little bit changing directions frequently meant he started to focus on the trainer. In the kennel aisle he did get distracted by other dogs but the trainer used treats to help keep Wolfgang engaged. Towards the end of the session the trainer got staff to approach and Wolfgang did a great job. He did struggle to get into drop but once there he was good about staying while 3 people were talking and moving around him. Well done. Focus: Distraction B
