Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: Mila’s first session was loose lead walking. The trainer worked on Mila’s engagement at the start to help her focus on the task. Once engaged Mila did a great job and if she pulled, the trainer changed direction and got Mila’s attention back. Mid session Mila got distracted and lost her focus totally. The trainer put Mila in a drop to help her reengage. Once Mila was focused the trainer continued again and Mila well. Focus: Repetition C
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: Next up was place for Mila. The trainer has noticed that at times Mila gets distracted by cars. So the trainer worked on place near a high traffic area. In this area Mila also had bird and fly distraction to contend with. Mila did well with the distractions. Although she was distracted by these things Mila still stayed in place. However, she struggled with trainer movement! The trainer upped the treats while moving around Mila. This helped Mila keep place better. At home if Mila is breaking place more then you will need to increase the treats. Focus: Distraction B
Skill learnt: Ring a Bell Comment: Last up was ring the bell! Mila has worked on this before so it was good to see that she hadn’t forgotten what she had to do. She was grabbing the bell with her mouth so the trainer withheld treats until Mila started to offer different behaviour. Mila started to get frustrated. Which is what happens when dogs are trying to work out what they need to do. Mila hit the bell with her paw and the trainer rewarded this. As the session progressed Mila was starting to really make the connection between touching the bell with her paw and a treat. It was a good session to end the week on. Focus: Repetition C+
