Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: In his first session, Mav focused on further developing his emergency drops. We focused on this skill to build his drop. Mav initially struggled to listen to the drop command while the trainer was walking, going back to basics and adding hand signals to help him. After a few repetitions, he was performing well. As he continued to perform well the trainer reduced the hand signal while he continued to perform well. Focus: Obedience B
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: In his second session, Mav focused on further developing his drop with duration under distractions. We focused on this skill as he has been struggling to maintain his drops recently. Maverick responds well to the drop command, he initially struggled and broke position when people approached him. As the session progressed he began to maintain his drop well and the trainers were able to challenge him further with dropping food in front of him to build his impulse control. He didn't break drop but was a little cheeky and reached as far as he could to reach the treats. Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Recall Comment: Today we focused on conditioning Maverick to the recall marker 'come' with high-value rewards. Conditioning this marker with high value treats is important to ensure he understands come means I get paid lots. For his high value treats the trainer was rewarding him by allowing him to eat from their treat pouch, only for a brief time. We focused on this as he can struggle with his recalls at times. Going back to basics to ensure he understands the command will help with the overall skill. Mav initially showed little response to the command, but as the session progressed he began to perform well. We would recommend practising this at home. Focus: Foundation B+
