Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Paws Up (on object) Comment: This session focused on her paws up skill but adding distance and increasing duration. Marie showed good prior knowledge of this skill so we were able to jump straight into increasing distance. She did step off the pod a couple times as the trainer backed away but we just reset her and tried again. We made sure to increase the distance in small increments - setting her up for success. This is a fun skill to use while out on walk, sending her to do paws up on different objects. Focus: Duration B+
Skill learnt: Trick Training Comment: This session focused on her hold skill. We used a wooden spoon. Marie initially started just nibbling the spoon handle. Through repetition she started to bite and hold slightly longer each time. We withheld treats after attempts that weren’t so great and only rewarded ones closer to the end product. Marie did have a really good attempt where she bit and held the handle for about 1-2 seconds. We jack-potted this with lots of treats and a celebration. To finish off we did some spins and middles, it is really important to end on a successful attempt - no more “just one more time.” Focus: Duration C+
Skill learnt: Recall Comment: We worked in one of the front paddocks for extra distraction, however this area proved a little bit too distracting. The sheep/alpaca poo and cars really grabbed her attention today so we worked on her drop durations and some loose lead walking. Once her engagement improved we threw in a few recalls when she found a nice smell in the grass - recalling her away from it! Marie did improve throughout the session, the smells were just too good initially! Focus: Distraction C+
