Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: For his first session we worked on Kovu's loose lead. Kovu was quite distracted to start off with and lacked engagement with the trainer for most of the session. We started off with a back to basics in the classroom to get his focus back on training and while he did improve after a while he was very distracted by other staff and dogs in the classroom. For the last 5 minutes we took him outside and while he was better than he was at the start of the session he could use improvement and better engagement. Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: For his second session we worked on the place skill. Kovu is very good at this skill, he was fine with sending to from a distance, toy distraction and food distraction. We did do a little bit of red light/green light with a tug toy but he was only a bit interested in playing. To push him we started on a different criteria - having him do place on another object (folded towel). He did so well with this and it took him no time at all to understand he had to stay on the towel until released! Start using different objects and surfaces for place at home to strengthen this skill further. Focus: Repetition B+
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: For his last session we worked on emergency drops with Kovu (drops while walking). He did struggle a bit to drop if the trainer kept walking so we had to use a lure several times for him to start understanding that he needed to drop regardless of whether the trainer was moving or not. He did do one emergency drop on his own without luring but it was a bit slow. Continuing on with this at home and during Dayschool sessions will help speed it up and get him used to having drop meaning drop right here, right now. Focus: Repetition C+
