Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: For his first session today the trainer worked on his drop skill. Last time he was working on his duration so this session they wanted to work on his distractions. Since it was a little hot today the trainer worked with Koby inside the cool classroom to escape the heat and was trainer a little earlier to escape the hot weather. He was put into a drop in the classroom and the trainer did the step away game, this is where the trainer will step away from the dog while they are in the drop and as he successfully stayed out they trainer increased the energy and the speed they stepped away as well as this distance, by the end of the session the trainer was leaping away making noises at Koby and he stayed in his drop! An important note about this session is not increasing the energy too much as to not allow Koby to deal with it, how quickly we progress has important implications on how quickly the dog learns. Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: For his second session the trainer wanted to work outside while it was still a little cool and early and so took Koby out to the lawn and worked in the shade on his place skill. The focus on the training today was on his ability to be sent to place. To work on this the trainer had two place beds and was asking Koby to first “break” off one and then go to “place” on the other. Having two beds which he is going in between can really help increase not only the distance we can send him to place but the speed as well, the trainers energy has a big part on this, the more excited they are for training the more excited it makes Koby so the trainer made sure to keep the energy positive and high today and it seems to have really helped with his training! Focus: Distance B
Skill learnt: Targeting (touch) Comment: For his last session today the trainer worked on his touch skill. This is when Koby uses his nose to touch something in command, he hasn’t don’t much of this so the trainer just worked on his basics for this skill. This involves holding the object we are trying to get Koby to touch and each time he touches it with his nose reward him. Each time he is rewarded his realises that touching with his nose is what is getting him the rewards and so this behaviour starts to increase. Next session the trainer will look to add the verbal of touch but for today the trainer just made sure Koby has a good solid base for this skill to then work and develop on it. He smashed it today doing really well keeping good focus and drive for the whole day, we can’t wait to have this boy back in again soon! Focus: Repetition C
