Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: For Kali’s first session today we worked on his loose lead skill outside in the carpark and on the grassed areas. He did super well with this and showed really great engagement. At the start he was very excited to get going and struggled to focus but after getting him to do some drops he began to calm down and engage with the trainer. He would look up and check in with the trainer every so often and would receive a reward. If he wanted to sniff something he had to sit, engage and then was allowed to sniff. Focus: Distraction B
Skill learnt: Recall Comment: For this session we worked on Kali’s recall. For this we went outside and put him in a drop, walked to the end of the long lead and called him. He did this super well and ran straight to the trainer, sat and got a reward. However, if he was super distracted smelling things he wouldn’t come back when called. To work on this we went somewhere slightly less distracting (carpark) and did it there. He did a little bit better here but still wasn’t 100% reliable. To further improve this it needs practice in low distracting environments and high value treats should be used (even tennis balls). Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: To help Kali learn how to settle we played a game with the tennis ball and place. We were able to get him all excited playing around with a ball and then sending him to place to calm down. We waited until he settled before we released him and started playing again for a couple minutes. He did really well with this, he took a couple minutes to settle back down but it will only get better the more you practice. To work on this at home, you can either utilise place or his drop skill to help him calm down. Focus: Repetition B
