Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: For Chilli’s first session today we worked on his drop skill. He had no word association so we used a lure to get him into position. He wouldn’t follow a lure straight into a drop so we lured him into a sit and then down. He did really well with this, we kept the treats coming frequently to make sure he didn’t break position before released. Keep working on his drops, he is showing some progress. Remember to work in familiar/low distracting environments while learning the skill. Once he is doing the skill 90% of the time with just a hand signal (without treat) then we can introduce the label “drop”. Focus: Foundation C+
Skill learnt: Targeting (touch) Comment: For his second session today Chilli focused on a new skill! We worked on his targeting/touch skill. To teach this skill we shape their behaviour, this means we simply wait for them to present a behaviour and shape it into what we want! We used a wooden spoon for this skill, we placed it in front of him and waited for any behaviour, whether that’s just him looking or sniffing it. Chilli didn’t get very far with this skill but he did manage to touch it a couple times. The more this is practiced the more likely he is to make an association between touching the object and getting a reward. This skill is a fun one because it can be used to gain the dogs focus or to get them to switch on a light switch! Focus: Foundation C+
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: For his last session today Chilli worked on his place training. He has good knowledge of this skill so we were able to lure him on and release him! We haven’t introduced the label “place” just yet as he isn’t quite ready! We pushed his skill but stepping around the bed while he stayed on there! He only broke position twice, when this happened we reduced movement a little bit and worked our way back up! He is doing really well with this, keep practicing it as home and see how he goes with more trainer movement. Focus: Duration B
