Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: Buddy’s first session was place. He was quite excited so this is always a good skill to start with to help him to settle and concentrate on what he needs to do. He was distracted by other dogs being trained to start with but the trainer increased the frequency of treats and this helped a little. Once the other dog left the classroom Buddy’s focus did stay on the trainer better but he still wanted to get off place a number of times when the trainer moved. However by the end of the session the trainer could see Buddy making good choices! At home make sure place is in different areas so that he learns to ignore different distractions. Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: Next up for Buddy was drop. He gets into drop quite well but doesn’t stay there long. The trainer worked on increasing his duration by increasing the frequency of treats. By the end of the session he was holding drop longer but Buddy started to then creep forward if the trainer took steps away from Buddy. So the goal is to be able to walk around Buddy without breaking position. Focus: Distraction C+
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: Final session for Buddy was loose lead. Again with minimal distractions outside Buddy did well. His engagement is quite good until he finds a smell he likes and then he likes to pull towards it. When this happens the trainer changed direction and this helps getting his focus back. Keep working on this at home in the backyard and increase treats and change direction if he becomes distracted. Focus: Repetition C+
