Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Conditioning Comment: For Buddy’s first session, it was focused on conditioning him to the trainer and the classroom as he was a bit nervous. He was not taking any treats at first, which is normal for a dog in a new environment, so the trainer took the time to just let him wander around the room at his own pace and sniff everything out. After a few minutes of this, Buddy began to take treats so the trainer just sat with him, charging his reward marker of ‘yes’. Each time he was given a treat, the trainer paired it with saying “yes”, which will teach Buddy that whenever he hears that word, a treat will be coming his way! Buddy is such a gorgeous boy and he did well for his first session of exploring and relaxing. Focus: Conditioning X
Skill learnt: Conditioning Comment: Next up, Buddy had another conditioning session, but this time it was a walk outside, exploring our facilities. Buddy was very happy about his walk and went absolutely everywhere, sniffing trees, the grass, statues etc. He was taking treats this whole session, which is great! He also explored our cattery and he loooooved it. We are just working on getting him comfortable with us and the new environment. Focus: Conditioning X
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: To finish off, the trainer worked with Buddy in the cattery (less distracting than the training room filled with people and dogs), and worked on his ‘drop’ skill. Buddy was able to go into a drop from a sit, but not just from a standing position, which is okay for beginning! He followed the treat lure 90% of the time, but some times he would just look at it and turn away. We want for Buddy to become more confident with out trainers so we are able to excel with him and watch him come out of his shell a bit more! ‘Drop’ is a great skill for Buddy to have as it is a controlled position and can redirect any unwanted behaviour (ie: jumping). Keep trying, Buddy! Focus: Foundation C+
