Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: Barnacle began his day with some ‘place training’, focusing on duration with distractions as he was in a particularly weird mood today. There is a little wheeled dog toy that is his biggest temptation, so the trainer used that for the whole session as it took Barney the full 15 minutes to calm down around it. By the end, the trainer was able to pull it right under his nose and he would not react, which is awesome! Keep pushing this skill at home and finding some weird, obscure toys or objects that might get him to break and work on it. Good work, Barney! Focus: Distraction B+
Skill learnt: Loose Lead (No pull) Comment: Next up, Barney worked on his ‘loose lead’ walking in the cattery, with plenty of feisty cat distractions and staff sweeping/mopping. Barney SMASHED IT!! He had the best engagement and listened so well. Keep up the awesome work with this and keep pushing those distractions for him! Use his non-reward marker “ah ah” and remember to be firm with him if he misbehaves, otherwise he will think he can get away with it. Great job, Barnacle! Focus: Distraction A
Skill learnt: Middle Position Comment: To finish off, Barney practiced his ‘middles’ skill, this time focusing on adding movement, using a treat lure to have him walk in between the trainers legs. He did really well!! It helps that Barney is food motivated and did anything for the treatos! Keep practicing this at home and see if you can soon start to fade the lure. This is a great skill for him to have as it is still a controlled position, you are just able to move in it and it is an awesome skill for his engagement. Amazing work today! Focus: Distraction B+
