Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: Barney started off his day practicing his ‘drop’ skill through red light green light. He was full of beans this morning and looooveeed playing with the tug toy! Barney did really well during this session and dropped each time when asked, which is beautiful! There was the odd time where he would just drop the toy and look at the trainer after they asked for a drop, but with the use of “ah ah” he plonked himself down quickly. Keep practicing this skill at home, he is still learning to master it. If there is a different toy at home he goes nuts for, definitely test him with that! Focus: Distraction B+
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: Next up, Barney worked on his ‘place training’, focusing on duration with distractions. As we know Barnacle breaks for the weirdest things, today it began with a nerf gun (not being shot though). He went NUTS. After a minute or 2 of just showing him the gun from a distance, Barney somewhat came to terms with it and settled. The next weird object were a pair of plastic clapping hands, again, CRAZY for them. With the use of his non-reward marker “ah ah” and some slight lead pressure, Barney would hop back on the place bed. By the end of the session he was being perfect and laid down, watching the trainer throw treats in front of him, testing his impulse control. Again, keep testing him at home with this skill, find the weirdest things and see how he goes! Focus: Distraction B
Skill learnt: Trick Training Comment: To finish up, Barnacle worked on his ‘sit pretty’ trick, focusing on both duration and getting him to hold it by himself, not using the trainer’s arm to steady himself. Barney is awesome at duration, but take away the steadying arm, and not so much. To help Barney stop doing this, the trainer would lure him into a sit pretty and say “yes” as soon as he was on his behind and his front legs were just hovering, he would still go to hold onto her arm, but the trainer would pull away before he could. Once he was back in his sit he would be rewarded. This was repeated. There were a few times where Barney understood and kept his legs down!! YAY! He is still very much learning, so push this at home and see how you go! It will be all about timing and taking away the arm, he is a smart boy and will soon pick it up! Focus: Duration B
