Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Trick Training Comment: For Baloo’s first session we worked on his Quoits skill. This is a good skill to push his thinking. Baloo struggled abit with his Quoits skill today as he often didn’t look where he was placing the ring and instead just picked it up and threw it. We focused on trying to get Baloo to understand that the skill is to put the ring on the stick and not just pick it up and throw it. This was achieved by rewarding when he would throw the ring closer to the stick and saying ‘nope’ if he moved it further away. Baloo started to get very frustrated half way through the session and instead started to perform his other skills such as bang and drop. After a few minutes of letting him settle while in his drop we continued with Quoits. While he did improve over the session, it appears Baloo doesn’t yet understand that he is aiming for a target and not just throwing it or bringing it to the trainer. The next step for a Baloo will be to continue getting him to build the understanding of placing the ring onto the stick. Focus: Repetition C+
Skill learnt: Trick Training Comment: For Baloo’s second session we worked on his chin rest. This is a good skill for Baloo as it allows him to settle. Baloo did really well with this and to push him we started working towards placing a treat on his nose. If Baloo lifted his chin while the trainer was moving the treat towards his nose he was told ‘nope’ and we restarted. We got up to holding the treat just above Baloo’s nose at the end of the session! This is really good for him as he is so good motivated. The next step for Baloo will be to continue working on his chin rest while placing a treat on his nose. Focus: Repetition B+
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: For Baloo’s last session we worked on his emergency drop skill. This is a good practical skill for Baloo as it can be used in real life situations. Baloo did really well and the trainer was even able to get up to a jogging pace. There were a couple times Baloo didn’t drop when asked and the trainer used ‘uh uh’ when this occurred. The next step for Baloo will be to start increasing the distractions he is performing his emergency drop around by going outside. Focus: Distraction B+

We recommend your next step should be…
