Skill Comment We focused on Grade
Skill learnt: Place Training Comment: For Akira’s first session today we worked on her place skill in the classroom. Since it was quite warm today we just focused on releasing, sending to and getting her to settle on place. She did pretty well with settling on place, after a few minutes she would lay down and just watch the trainer. This is really good for them to practice as it’s quite a distracting environment and if they can learn to settle with the people and dogs around it helps them with other scenarios. Akira did quite well with trainer distraction as well, staying on place while the trainer walked around the bed seemed hard for Akira but she managed to do it! She would jump around and follow the trainer but she only stepped off twice! A simple “ah ah” was enough for her to put her feet back on the bed. Keep practicing this skill and she will have it nailed in no time. Focus: Distraction B
Skill learnt: Drop/ Down Comment: For Akira’s second session today we focused on her drop durations. Since it was so warm today she didn’t mind laying on the cool floor. At the start of the session we worked on just gaining her focus and getting her into position for a few reward markers and treats, then releasing her. We built this up to having her in a drop while the trainer sat down, stood up, walked around her and then released her. Akira showed some great improvement with her drops today, keep working on these at home with handler distractions. Focus: Duration B
Skill learnt: Paws Up (on object) Comment: For her last session today we worked on something different. We tried paws up, Akira was quite tired by this last session so it was a nice easy skill to work with. Paws up is a good skill to help dogs build confidence with different surfaces and also in their balance. We used a plastic pod/step and lured her near it. She was really hesitant to put her feet on it so we laid some treats around it and on top of it to help Akira get used to the object. We weren’t able to get her to put a foot on the pod but she did knock it a couple times which we still rewarded her for. Try luring Akira onto some stable objects at home like steps, chairs, books etc. This is a fun skill to practice and helps dogs build confidence! Focus: Foundation C+
