Treating Reactivity, what you need to really focus on!Posted on

Dog “reactivity” is one of the most common and misunderstood challenges for owners today. But here’s the truth: treating the symptom without addressing the underlying causes is a recipe for failure. “Reactivity” is a sign of deeper issues, and here are SOME ways you can start to tackle it now:

🐾 Leash Skills: Leash handling is a dying art, but it’s critical. Your leash is a communication tool, not a restraint. Poor leash use can confuse your dog and play a big part in your dogs “reactions”. Learn how to guide, communicate and not just pull.

🐾 Boundaries & Rules: A chaotic home life often reflects in the dogs behaviour. Dogs crave structure—rules and boundaries help them feel secure. Rules and boundaries give your dogs more freedom!  If your dog isn’t well at home, don’t expect miracles outside.

🐾 Health & Diet: Behaviour and health are closely linked. Is your dog pain-free, at a healthy weight, and on a proper nutritious diet? These factors can have a massive impact on their mental state and ability to handle stress. Does your cranky threshold lower when you don’t feel well?

🐾 Enrichment: Bored dogs create their own “jobs,” and trust us—you won’t like what they pick! Dogs need physical and mental stimulation. Without it, they may develop fears and other issues, creating their own stories like, “Other dogs are scary because of X, Y, and Z.” Keep their minds and bodies busy and fulfilled.

🐾 Training: A well-trained dog (and owner!) is more confident and less likely to develop reactivity. Invest in building skills from an early age—or start now. Training empowers both ends of the leash. Knowledge is power!

🐾 Owner Growth: Change starts with you. To truly help your dog, you need to learn and grow alongside them. Be open to new knowledge and willing to adjust your habits. You’re a team, and success depends on both of you working together.

Reactivity is complex, but remember: it’s a symptom, not the root problem. Treating the “cough” won’t cure the “illness.” Take it step by step, what you can when you can, and don’t be afraid to seek professional help.
